Summer arrives, you open your patio or balcony awning after it's been rolled up all winter, and… surprise! It's covered in black stains and mold due to the humidity. What can we do to clean it? How do we proceed without damaging the fabric? First, we must remain calm and clean the surfaces with suitable, less abrasive products before deciding to replace the awning.

WHAT YOU SHOULD NEVER DO
As professionals in the installation of awnings and bioclimatic pergolas, we recommend some tips such as:
- Do not use pure bleach or highly abrasive products: They will fade the color and weaken the fabric.
- Be careful with pressure washers (like Kärcher) at full power: If you hold it too close, the pressure can tear the canvas or break the seams.
- Do not roll up the awning while it's wet: If you clean it and roll it up while it's still wet, the mold will grow back twice as fast within three days.

Did you know that strong gusts of wind are the number one enemy of wet tarpaulins?
When an awning has mold and you wet it to clean it, the fabric fibers become momentarily heavier and stiffer. If a sudden gust of wind hits (something very common in coastal areas like Dénia, Gandia, or Cullera), the risk of the fabric tearing triples. That's why motorized awnings aren't a luxury these days; they're a safety measure. Our awnings with motors and automatic wind sensors detect gusts and retract automatically, protecting your fabric even if you're not home or if you've been distracted while it was drying.
THE BEST SOLUTION, STEP BY STEP
We can clean the areas where mold and black spots appear at home, but if it doesn't improve, we should mention it to the MK TOLDOS technical department.
Step 1: Remove surface dust, pollen, or leaf debris with a soft brush.
Step 2: The magic mixture. Warm water, mild soap (or a splash of white cleaning vinegar, which is a powerful natural mildew inhibitor and won't damage the fabric).
Step 3: Gently scrub. Use a soft-bristled brush on areas with black stains. Let the mixture sit for 10-15 minutes.
Step 4: Rinse thoroughly. Use a hose with low pressure to remove all traces of soap.
Step 5: Sun drying. This is the most important step. The awning must be completely dry before being put up.

What if the stains don't come out?
Sometimes mold penetrates the awning fabric so deeply that it becomes very difficult to remove. The fabric rots, and there's no magic solution. In that case, the most aesthetically pleasing and safest option (breathing mold isn't good) is to replace only the fabric and keep the aluminum frame. If you've tried cleaning your awning and the black stains persist, or if you prefer to leave the maintenance to professionals, MK Toldos can help. We specialize in fabric replacement and awning renovation in Gandia, Denia, Cullera, Paterna, and the surrounding areas. We also serve Alicante, Murcia, and Ibiza.
